Pope Francis has died at the age of 88.
The Pope had serious health problems, recently surviving a double pneumonia. He was last seen yesterday, in a fragile state, wishing Happy Easter at St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican.
His death was announced by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, now serving as the acting head of the Vatican.
World leaders are sending their condolences and paying their tributes. Slovenia’s President Nataša Pirc Musar said Pope Francis, who truly loved people, left his heart in this world.
Pope Francis was the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church. His funeral will take place in nine days.
