The parliamentary Constitutional Commission has given unanimous support to a draft constitutional amendment that would guarantee the right to pay with cash.
The proposal, which originated from a citizens’ initiative called We Are Connected in November 2023, will now go before the National Assembly for final approval.
The group gathered more than 56,000 signatures to support the move, arguing that cash should remain legal tender even if digital currencies are introduced in the future.
At today’s commission meeting, We Are Connected representative Ivan Jurgec said more and more shops in Slovenia are refusing cash payments, while many bank customers are facing tighter limits on cash transactions.
