A national wildfire centre opened in Sežana today.
It will train firefighters to deal with large wildfires. The centre hopes to train around 1,000 firefighters in the first year, who would help not only Slovenia but also neighboring countries.
The head of Slovenia's Administration for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief, Leon Behin, said the goal is turn Sežana into a central coordination centre in case of fires in western Slovenia.
The opening was also attended by EU's Commissioner for Budget, Piotr Serafin, as the centre was co-financed with EU funds from the Resilience and Recovery Plan.
The wildfire centre in Sežana opens nearly three years after the devastating wildfires in the Karst region.
