The government said that it wanted to increase road safety, especially among minors, and also come into line with legislation being used in other EU countries.

There have been numerous cases of serious injuries and even fatalities in many EU countries connected to the use of e-scooters, involving collisions with other vehicles or pedestrians.

Medical professionals have warned of a worrying increase in the number of injuries they are seeing due to falls, high speeds and a lack of protective gear, such as helmets.

The State Secretary at the Ministry of Infrastructure, Andrej Rajh, said that accessibility to such vehicles had become a serious problem. He added that drivers under the age of 15 lacked sufficient motor skills, traffic knowledge and maturity to safely drive such light vehicles.
