The government adopted a decree on the construction of new waste incineration facilities.
30-year concessions will be awarded for new facilities which, together with the existing plant in Celje, would process up to 140,000 tons of waste per year.
Environment, Climate and Energy Minister Bojan Kumer, said this was a very important step, as Slovenia currently exports more than 75% of its waste abroad, making it almost completely dependent on foreign facilities. Moreover, the costs of exporting waste are also rising.
Apart from the existing waste incineration facility in Celje, two more facilities could be built in Ljubljana and Maribor. Slovenia currently has to export waste to countries as far as Denmark and the Netherlands.
